Types of Crimes
There are two types of crimes a person can commit, a crime of commission and a crime of omission.
Crime of Commission - A crime committed when a person acts when he or she is forbidden to act according to the law. Examples of crimes of commission are theft, murder, assault, etc.
Crime of Omission - A crime that is committed when a person fails to act when he or she is required to act by the law. Examples of crimes of omission include child neglect, not paying taxes, and not showing up for jury duty.
In addition to crimes of commission and omission, there are six categories of crimes a person can commit:
Visible Crime
Victimless Crime
Occupational Crime
Cybercrime

Visible Crime
- Visible crime is any crime that we can observe with the naked eye.
- Visible crimes are everything from shop lifting to homicide, virtually every crime that can be committed and are acts that the public consider criminal.
- Visible crime is also called street crime or ordinary crime.
- There are three types of visible crime: violent crime, property crime, and public order crime.
- Violent Crimes are crimes against people in which physical injury or death results on another person. Assault and battery, rape, and murder are all types of violent crimes.
- Property Crimes are acts that threaten property held by the state government or an individual. Vandalism is an example of property crime.
- Public Order Crimes are acts that threaten the well-being of society. A terrorist group threatening to bomb a government or any type of building is an example of a public order crime.
Victimless Crime
- Victimless crimes are offenses against morality.
- These crimes usually offer a willing and private exchange of goods and/or services.
- Crimes like prostitution, gambling, selling illegal weapons, selling drugs or the use of drugs are all examples of victimless crimes.
Occupational Crime
- Occupational crimes are crimes committed within the vicinity of a legal business or profession
- An example of an occupational crime would be enron, which is the internal theft of items located within the workplace that are stolen by the employees.
- Organized crimes refer to a framework or organization of people where criminal acts are committed and carried out by all the members.
- The most notable example of organized crime is the mafia or gangs.
- Political crimes are criminal acts that are committed either by or against the government.
- They are carried out for one's own ideological purposes, these criminals believe they're following a morality that is above the laws that the government has enforced upon them.
- Examples of political crimes include bombing an abortion clinic, or attempting to assassinate or injure any member of the government.
Cybercrime
- Cyber crime involves the use of computers and the internet to commit a crime against someone.
- Examples of cyber crime include stealing funds from a person's bank account, identity theft, the distribution of child pornography, or even as simple as hacking into someone's computer.
